Andersen’s fairy tales, such as “The Mermaid Princess” and “The Girl Selling Matches,” are well known throughout the world, but they are also said to be “difficult to make into picture books.
Andersen’s stories reflect his childhood memories, travel experiences, and ideas, as well as the unique Danish language and culture of his homeland, so it is difficult to create a picture without understanding them.
This exhibition introduces picture books of Andersen’s fairy tales, which are considered “difficult to illustrate,” by focusing on the relationship between Andersen’s texts and pictures. We hope you will enjoy the richness of expression of Andersen’s “words” that can be seen through the illustrations.
