2024.02.20

Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku-gun, Nagano Prefecture (Mayor: Michio Tsuchiya), Karuizawa Taxi Association (Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku-gun, Chairman: Kazuhiko Matsuba), Karuizawa Commerce and Industry Association (Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku-gun, Chairman: Junichi Nakazato), Karuizawa Tourism Association (Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku-gun, Chairman: Yoshiharu Tsuchiya), Karuizawa Hotel and Ryokan Association (Karuizawa Town, Kitasaku-gun, Chairman: Takeo Suzuki) and GO Co. (Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Hiroshi Nakajima) have signed a partnership agreement for the “Karuizawa Taxi Supply Enhancement Project” as a way to solve the transportation issues caused by the increase in tourists during the tourist season in Karuizawa Town. The project will combine three measures: (1) more efficient operation of the existing cab fleet through the introduction of the “GO” cab app, (2) introduction of “Japanese-style ride-sharing,” and (3) dispatch of cab vehicles and drivers from surrounding areas in Nagano Prefecture for a limited time to ensure last-mile transportation. The project will be promoted in cooperation between the public and private sectors with the aim of starting operation this spring.

Based on|Taxi DX, support for last mile travel through cab support dispatch and three measures of “Japanese-style ridesharing

In Karuizawa, the number of tourists increases markedly during the tourist season, and during busy periods such as GW, the summer season from July to September, and the foliage season in November, demand for transportation swells locally, making last-mile travel difficult for both tourists and local residents. On the other hand, the number of vehicles owned by local cab companies is difficult to secure an appropriate number of vehicles due to the difficulty of securing drivers and the large fluctuation between peak and off-peak periods.

In order to solve this issue, a public-private partnership agreement has been signed to promote measures to ensure last mile travel. With the cooperation of the Nagano Prefectural Taxi Association, this initiative will include the introduction of the “GO” cab application to Karuizawa’s existing cab fleet, the dispatch of cab drivers from the surrounding areas of Karuizawa Prefecture, and the support of local organizations in recruiting and marketing to promote the use of “GO,” as well as the use of “Japanese-style ride sharing” by local cab operators. The project also plans to utilize “Japanese-style ridesharing” by local taxi operators.
