Kusakaru Electric Railway
The Kusakaru Electric Railway, a light railway connecting Karuizawa and Kusatsu Onsen in about three hours.
The railroad, which carried sulfur extracted in Kusatsu and mixed passengers for hire, ran from the Asama Plateau in early spring, to Karuizawa with the cicadas singing, to Kusatsu Onsen with its autumn leaves, and then through the harsh white winter.
The train, filled with the dreams of many people, was damaged by repeated typhoons, and in February 1962, after a heavy snowfall, it quietly came to an end after about 47 years of history.
