Animals Living in Picture Books / Karuizawa Museum of Picture Book Art Spring 2019 Exhibition

*Click to open large image

Animals in picture books are often depicted in anthropomorphic forms, such as speaking, walking on two legs, and wearing clothes. When we encounter animals that come alive in these storybook worlds, we experience an “extraordinary” world that transcends the laws of human society. It is an opportunity to reconsider the values and rules of the human-centered political world that we always take for granted in our daily lives.
This exhibition introduces picture books featuring animals from various perspectives, including the skillful depiction of animals by Leslie Brook, an artist active in the first half of the 20th century, fascinating animals depicted by contemporary picture book authors, and a feature on “Aesop’s Fables”. Through observation of original picture book drawings and picture book materials, the exhibition will explore the ecology of animals living in the world of picture books. We hope that visitors will enjoy a moment to free their minds and hearts in the forest with the animals living freely.
