Born in Osaka in 1936, Tsuyoshi Maekawa joined the avant-garde art group “Gutai Art Association” in 1962 and became a core member of the second generation of “Gutai” artists. He has consistently focused on materials, creating works using a variety of fabrics, such as “dongolos,” a thick, rough cloth used to make jute bags, soft linen with fine fibers, and cotton fabrics. His works are in the collections of museums around the world, including the Tate Modern in the United Kingdom, and are highly acclaimed worldwide.

This exhibition introduces the current state of the artist, who continues to work energetically, with a focus on recent works produced since the 2000s, including the latest works on view for the first time.
