Karuizawa’s history as a vacation home began in the Meiji Era when Westerners began visiting the area to escape the summer heat. As in Yokohama and Kobe, which were reservations at the time, Western culture spread quickly in Japan. The most prominent example of this is food culture. Bread making and western vegetable cultivation methods were introduced to the local people, and dairy farming was also introduced. This tour will take you to the roots of Karuizawa’s food culture, which has been nurtured along with its history.
